The benefits of Legal Expense Insurance

As part of your OPIP coverage, your Legal Expense Insurance policy also provides unlimited access to a legal helpline.

A helpline lawyer will provide you with information and assistance on any personal legal matter, regardless if it is covered by the policy or not.

You also have the option to call and schedule a time for a helpline lawyer to call you when it is most convenient within your busy schedule.

This policy, provided by ARAG Legal Solutions Inc., protects you, your spouse or civil partner and children normally living at home by covering legal costs for:

  • Tax disputes (personal and business)

  • Driver’s licence protection

  • Employment disputes

  • Auto and employee legal defence

  • Property disputes

  • Worldwide bodily injury

  • Auto and non-auto contract disputes

A wide range of legal expenses are covered, including your assigned legal counsel and court fees, plus if a judge orders you to pay the other party’s legal costs if you happen to lose your case.

Information for OPIP members

  • Any covered incident must be reported to ARAG within 120 days of the date of occurrence

  • Only legal expenses that have received prior approval from ARAG will be reimbursed

How to make a claim with ARAG

Making a claim is easy – just follow these four steps:

  1. Call the Helpline
    Call 1-855-953-1433 (8 a.m. - midnight, 7 days a week)
    In emergencies, lawyers are available 24/7. Have your OMA number ready as your policy number.

  2. Speak with a Lawyer
    A lawyer will review your situation and provide advice. If it qualifies under your policy, they’ll forward your file to the claims team.

  3. Claim Review
    ARAG will assess your file. If approved, a panel lawyer will be assigned. A claims rep will support you throughout.

  4. Case Handling
    Your lawyer will manage your case until it’s resolved. Note that legal matters can take time to complete.
