OPIP Critical Illness benefit

OPIP coverage for members includes a Critical Illness benefit. If approved for a claim, you may receive $50,000 lump sum payment1 after surviving a diagnosis of one of 25 covered serious illnesses. Your payment gives you the freedom and flexibility to use the funds as you see fit. For example, you can use the money for:

  • Out of country treatment, travel and expenses2
  • Experimental treatment
  • Medical equipment
  • Home modification
  • Private nursing or personal support worker
  • Mortgage or other debts

At time of initial OPIP application, OMA members under age 65can also purchase an additional $50,000 each for coverage for themselves and their spouse — with no medical evidence required — under the OMA Group Critical Illness Insurance plan.

The actual cost is subsidized at 65 per cent by the government with the remainder paid by the member. Premium rates are subject to applicable sales tax. Rates are based on sex at birth, age band and smoking status.

“Age” means attained age as of policy anniversary (Jan. 1). Please note premiums change as you reach certain ages as shown in the table.

1 Based on the current tax laws, the cash benefit from a group critical illness insurance plan will not presently be taxed when the premiums are paid for by you and the benefit is payable to you. Diagnosis of a critical illness, such as cancer, heart attack or stroke, must occur after the effective date of coverage and you must complete a survival period (usually 30 days).

2 Emergency out of province/country travel medical coverage is only available with Health/Health Plus insurance.

3 Critical Illness insurance is only available to members under age 65. Critical Illness Insurance is available to members age 65 and over only when renewing coverage, which ends at age 70.
