Frequently asked questions

When you select Family Coverage, your family will become insured as follows:

  • If you do not have dependent children, your spouse will be insured for 50 per cent of the benefit you have selected for yourself
  • If you and your spouse have dependent children, your spouse will be insured for 40 per cent of your benefit and each dependent child, regardless of the number, will be insured for 10 per cent of your benefit, to a maximum of $100,000 per child
  • If you do not have a spouse, each dependent child will be insured for 20 per cent of your benefit, up to a maximum of $100,000 per child

If both you and your spouse have coverage as association members, the insurance for each child is increased to 20 per cent of the insured amount of the person who elects Family Coverage (to a maximum of $100,000). Only one member may apply for Family Coverage — either you or your spouse, but not both. You may be covered as an insured member or a spouse, but not as both.

If you qualify, you may select this coverage in conjunction with the regular plan for an additional annual premium of $180 per $100,000 unit.

Common disaster: If both you and your spouse die in the same accident, your spouse’s coverage will be increased to match that of your coverage, to a maximum of $500,000.

Repatriation: Pays up to $15,000 when death occurs outside the country of residence for the return of remains (as long as you reside in Canada or United States).

Education: Pays $5,000 a year for a maximum of four years to each insured dependent child who, at the time of your accidental death, was enrolled as a full-time student in an institution of higher learning beyond the 12th grade level; or, if at the 12th grade level and subsequently enrols as a full-time student in an institution of higher learning within 365 days of the date of your accidental death.

Spousal training: If you’re a resident in Canada or the United States and die in an accident, your spouse can take advantage of a formal occupational training program to become qualified for active employment where your spouse would not otherwise be qualified. This benefit is available within five years of the accident and up to $15,000 in total is available for expense payments.
