Every stage of your life and career will bring new priorities, challenges and events. In the insurance world, a life event is something that changes a person's family or work status, perhaps altering their financial commitments and/or priorities and affecting their insurance needs. When a life event occurs you may have to increase or decrease your coverage and perhaps add or remove dependents.
For OPIP/Health and Health Plus purposes, a life event change is defined as:
If there are people in your life who become qualified for coverage as a result of a life event change, you can add them to the plan with no medical evidence as long as you apply within 90 days of the effective date of the life event change. We cannot process a future event, meaning you need to wait until the event happens first, then you have 90 days to request the change.
We understand that after a major life event, deadlines are not always the number one priority. You can still add a dependent to your OMA policies after 90 days but the dependent must undergo underwriting. This means the covered dependent will be required to provide medical evidence in order to qualify for the coverage.
A "dependent" means the insured member's spouse and/or dependent child who resides in Canada.
Your spouse must be your spouse by marriage or under any other formal union recognized by law, or a person who you publically represent as your spouse. You can only cover one spouse at a time.
A “dependent child” means a natural child, stepchild or legally adopted child of you or your spouse who resides in Canada, and who is not married and is under the age of 18 or under the age of 25 and is a full-time student or any age if physically or mentally handicapped.
