Here’s to a hassle-free move!

The papers are signed, the SOLD sign is up and it's official - you're moving to a new home. Whether you're finally getting your own place (no more roommates!) or relocating to accommodate your expanding family, the moving process can be a stressful one. The good news is, planning your move in advance can go a long way in helping to reduce stress as well as risk.

 

We've put together a list that we hope will help make your household move as smooth and as safe as possible.

 

Four to six weeks prior to move

  • Start purging! Get rid of any items you no longer need (clothes, furnishings, books etc.) by donating them to local thrift shops like Goodwill, Value Village or the Salvation Army. Many charities also welcome donated items. You can also place ads on sites like Kijiji or sell your items on eBay​
  • Make a list of items that will be going with you and what will be left behind. Use the floor plan of your new place to help you determine what will work and what won’t. Don't forget to take elevators into consideration if you're moving into a condo
TIP: Search your smartphone's app store for apps that can help you keep track of your home contents and give you an idea of how much it will cost to move them.
  • Book a moving company or rental van. Remember, as an OMA member you'll receive preferred rates on from Campbell Moving Systems and TransferEASE Relocation services​​​
  • Be sure to ask the mover about Replacement Value Protection. While it’s not actually insurance, it will reimburse you for items that are lost, damaged or destroyed based on their current value
  • Notify your security company, landscaping, pool service and/or cleaning services of your moving date
  • Provide Canada Post with your new address, as well as any subscriptions or memberships, banks and credit card companies
  • Contact your home insurer to review your coverage. If your home is currently insured through OMA, just call 1.877.277.7165
  • If you have children, register them at their new school and arrange to have their records transferred
  • If you're currently renting, give notice to your landlord. (Your lease probably has a minimum notice period. If you have to leave before then, you may have to pay for the remaining time.)
  • Notify your professional advisors: doctors, dentists, insurance advisors, lawyers, accountants, etc.

Two to three weeks prior to move

  • Let the packing begin! Label each box according to room location and write the contents on the outside so you can find everything easily after your move

​TIP: Use colour-coded stickers to represent different rooms.

  • Use sturdy containers like large plastic storage boxes or proper moving boxes 
  • Put heavy items like medical books in smaller boxes and save your large boxes for lighter items. Wrap kitchen knives, scissors and other sharp items in paper before boxing them. When you’re packing plates, arrange them vertically to prevent breakage. Wine boxes from the liquor store are perfect for packing glasses.
  • Make sure any fragile items are packed with extra care and properly labelled
  • ​Contact your utility and internet providers. Give them your moving date/last day of service and day of arrival at your new location

​TIP: Take a photo of how your electronics are connected so you can remember how and where all the wires go.

  • If you're movi​ng within the same city, consider hiring a sitter for the kids and pets (one less thing to worry about on moving day and less stress for the little ones.)
  • Can’t take everything but also don't want to get rid of certain items? Consider renting a storage unit – it’s also a good idea to get storage insurance as your items may not be covered under your homeowner policy
  • Update your government documents and I.D., including driver’s license and OHIP​, as well as any other permits or registrations

One week before your move

  • Drain any gas or oil from your lawn mowers, gas grills and snow blowers
  • As you're packing, mark one or two boxes as "essentials" – include those items you know you’ll need right away

​TIP: Put these items in a clear plastic bin so they are easier to find.

  • Defrost your fridge or freezer
  • Get rid of any flammables before you move as they increase the risk of combustion and fire. Paint thinners, oil, and other household chemicals should all be disposed of

The day before

 

  • Pack any valuables that you intend to take yourself (jewellery, art, prescriptions, important documents) 
  • Collect all house keys and have them ready for the new owner, real estate agent or landlord

 

Moving day

 

  • Safety first! If you’re moving yourself, use dollies or carts to carry heavy items
  • Once everything has been loaded on to the moving vehicle, do a walk-through to ensure that you have everything
  • If you’re moving long distance, get a copy of the inventory list from the mover so you can track each piece on the other end. Even if you’re moving locally, it’s a good idea to make a list of the number of boxes and furniture items so you can notify the mover right away if anything is missing. Typically, claims must be made within 30 days for local moves and within 60 days for long distance moves

 

The key thing to remember about moving is that, the more you can take care of ahead of time, the less headaches you’ll have to deal with later on. Safe moving!
